Local nonprofit 37th District Buyer’s Coalition handed out 5,208 pounds of frozen ground beef to local charities at Spencer’s Fresh Market in Santa Maria on Friday, according to organizers.

The $34,000 in high quality, locally raised meat will go directly to help organizations feed the food insecure in local communities. Since 2022 the nonprofit has purchased over 260 animals from 4-H, FFA and Grange exhibitors at the livestock auction at the Santa Barbara County Fair.

Funds are raised through grants, fundraisers, donations and local business sponsorships to support the youth in their animal projects, and process the purchased animals to donate the meat back to the community — over 80,000 pounds to date.
