OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - “They don’t feed on blood, they’re just kind of annoying.”
Whether it’s a Husker game, a pumpkin patch, anywhere you’re spending time outside, you may have encountered these little guys.
They’re called minute pirate bugs. Entomologist Jody Green with Nebraska Extension Douglas & Sarpy Counties says these teeny tiny bugs are common to our region, because of the warmer and dry agriculture.
But she believes they may be biting us more often.
“I’ve been talking to entomologist friends in Wisconsin and they’re like ‘we have the same crops but maybe it’s been wetter here,’” says Green. “It’s this time of year because the crops are being harvested and they’re normally in the fields eating spider mites, thrips and moth eggs.
