LINCOLN, Neb. —
Some Nebraska state lawmakers re-upped their call for a public hearing on the planned ICE detention center in southwestern Nebraska after the sprawling 183-page contract was published last Friday.
"It does answer a lot of questions; it also raises a number of other questions," Sen. Wendy DeBoer, vice chair of the Judiciary Committee, said.
A group of state senators has pushed for a hearing in the Judiciary Committee since Gov. Jim Pillen announced plans to turn the McCook Work Ethic Camp into a site for migrant detention, arguing that the executive branch doesn't have the legal authority to call the shots.
"The people of Nebraska will always have a right to know," Sen. Victor Rountree, who sits on the Judiciary Committee, said. "I still think a hearing is necessary."
