HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) — A lawsuit filed by Students for Fair Admissions challenges Kamehameha Schools’ admissions policy, claiming the institution’s “race-based admission policy is illegal and continues to harm families.”
The lawsuit states the court should “order Kamehameha to desegregate with all deliberate speed.”
Kamehameha graduates and Hawaiian community leaders said they anticipated the legal challenge .
“I think we are all disappointed, but I think we are ready. When SFFA made their intentions known a few months ago , a lot of preparation has been going on,” said Jacob Aki, who graduated from Kamehameha in 2013.
The lawsuit references the 2000 Rice v. Cayetano case, which required the state to allow all residents to vote in Office of Hawaiian Affairs elections.
