The European Union is considering classifying ethanol as a dangerous substance that increases the risk of cancer, a move that could effectively ban many hand sanitisers and detergents used by hospitals, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

In April this year, the EU began reviewing ethanol, a chemical best known as the key ingredient in alcoholic beverages, over concerns about potential health risks. This time, the focus is on ethanol's use as a disinfectant rather than as a drink.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, ethanol-based hand sanitisers became essential for personal hygiene and public health. Ethanol is effective in killing viruses, bacteria, and fungi and is widely used in hospitals, food production, and everyday cleaning products.
