LUBBOCK, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed the sheriff of Lubbock County as the new chair of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

According the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Kelly Rowe was tapped to assume his roll on the state's regulatory agency for all county jails and privately operated municipal jails in the state.

The agency also assists local governments in providing safe, secure and suitable local jail facilities through their provision of the services.

Rowe has served as a board member of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards since 2015. Sheriff’s Rowe’s term on board was expected to end in 2027; however his appointment as chair extends his current term to an unspecified length.
