Prosecutors Say Workers From Seven County Agencies Falsely Claimed Joblessness While Collecting Full Salaries

Thirteen Los Angeles County workers are facing felony charges after prosecutors said they collected hundreds of thousands of dollars in unemployment benefits while they continued receiving County paychecks during the pandemic period.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed the case in Superior Court, accusing the defendants of stealing a combined $437,383 from the California Employment Development Department (EDD) between 2020 and 2023. According to prosecutors, each defendant repeatedly certified — under penalty of perjury — that they earned less than $600 per week, even while drawing regular County salaries that made them ineligible for the program.
