Nation Online has established that prominent businessperson Dr. Thom Mpinganjira is among the 37 prisoners pardoned by former President Lazarus Chakwera during Malawi’s Independence Day celebrations.
Dr. Mpinganjira, who was convicted by the High Court on October 5, 2021, and sentenced to nine years in prison for attempting to bribe judges, had appealed his conviction at the Supreme Court of Appeal.
He was being held at Chichiri Prison in Blantyre and had served 122 days before being released on bail pending appeal.
Following the presidential pardon, Mpinganjira has since written to the Supreme Court of Appeal formally withdrawing his appeal against the High Court’s ruling.
