SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – A team of consultants will present Tuesday night the final draft of Sullivan’s Island’s first-ever sea level adaptation and resilience plan.
Leaders say the plan aims to protect natural and cultural resources and would help restore natural systems. Specifically, it would help protect the island from flooding, erosion, and high tides.
One part of the plan recommends raising the elevation of the Ben Sawyer Causeway, which town officials said is a critical path for hurricane evacuations and emergency vehicles.
Town leaders explained that the thoroughfare needs to be protected from floodwater to keep residents on the island safe.
