A Norfolk County housing developer is calling for municipal government assistance, as local home sales slow and demand for new builds dries up.

Sam Bunting, owner of Norfolk-based Prominent Homes and past president of the Haldimand-Norfolk Homebuilders’ Association, told Norfolk council at a recent council-in-committee meeting his business has experienced a 60 per cent reduction in new housing sales over the past two year.

To make his point, Bunting said he’s been unable to sell a home behind Simcoe’s Walmart, listed for $799,000, that has been on the market for a year.

He said sales have stagnated despite he and other developers making “some significant cost reductions, scaling back on the size of homes” and downgrading some features and finishes to make the houses more affordable.
