Canada’s headline inflation rate jumped more than expected to 2.4 per cent in September from 1.9 per cent the month before, with measures of core inflation remaining elevated, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

The data comes a little more than a week before the Bank of Canada ‘s next interest rate decision.

The rise was attributed to gasoline prices falling less in September than they did in August, a slower year-over-year decline in travel tour prices and accelerating grocery prices.

Economists at RBC and Scotiabank had projected 2.3 per cent increases.
