A 67-year-old Stratford man with a history of domestic violence is accused of fatally stabbing his girlfriend with a kitchen knife and telling 911 dispatchers he planned to kill himself, authorities said.

Stanley Mulvey called 911 around 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, to report he had stabbed his 62-year-old girlfriend, Megan McShane, inside their Griffen Street home and intended to turn the knife on himself, Stratford police said.

Officers rushed to the scene and found Mulvey lying on top of McShane on the kitchen floor. Both were covered in blood, and a large kitchen knife was nearby, authorities said.

Mulvey refused to move when officers ordered him to and fought as they tried to handcuff him, police said. Once in custody, Mulvey repeatedly told officers he had killed McShane, according to police.

Investigators said Mulvey is a convicted felon who was arrested in May for a domestic violence incident involving McShane. Friends and loved ones posted tributes online, remembering McShane, a Norwalk native, as news of her death spread across social media.

Police charged Mulvey with murder and interfering with an officer. He is being held on a $1 million bond, police said.
