How Phoenix cleared its homeless encampment 'The Zone'

The area surrounding Phoenix’s Key Campus, halfway between the state Capitol and the heart of downtown Phoenix, has long drawn people living on the streets.

The encampment along Jefferson Street grew as the city grew. After the COVID-19 pandemic, it mushroomed into a 15-block stretch where more people lived in tents and boxes on the pavement than half the entire population of Gila Bend.It was called "The Zone."
