WASHINGTON — The National Guard is staying in D.C. indefinitely — possibly well into 2026, according to a new court filing from the D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb.

In the filing from Friday, the Office of the Attorney General said internal documents show National Guard officials planning for a “long-term persistent presence,” potentially lasting through the country's bicentennial celebration next summer.

Around 2,500 National Guard troops remain in the District following the president's federal surge. Nearly 1,500 are from out-of-state, according to the latest D.C. Joint Task Force numbers.

The latest filing by Schwalb is part of a lawsuit against the Trump administration's deployment of the National Guard in D.C., which he says is illegal. The D.C. Attorney General also included
