Improved communications between the City of Kitchener and the local humane society are expected as a result of new procedures when dogs are deemed dangerous or prohibited.

But additional legal powers that could allow a dog to be seized before an appeal hearing is held would have to be granted by the provincial government.

Council approved changes to the dog designation process on Monday night based on recommendations in a staff report, but there was no discussion on the item.

The mayor, ward councillor and city staff will be informed when the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo & Stratford Perth designates a dog prohibited.

The humane society will also inform city legal staff when conditions imposed on the owners of dangerous or prohibited dogs have been satisfied.
