Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stuck by Australia’s Ambassador to the United States and former prime minister Kevin Rudd as he brushed off calls for him to be sacked after he was publicly grilled by President Donald Trump.

Calls for the ambassador to step down from his position in Washington came after Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell asked President Trump why the meeting with Mr Albanese had taken so long to organise and questioned whether it had anything to with Australia’s position on climate change, Palestine or Mr Rudd.

"I don’t know anything about him (Mr Rudd). If he said (something) 'bad' then maybe he’d like to apologise,” the President said in response.
