BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - North Dakota Health and Human Services confirmed that SNAP benefits will be paused beginning Nov. 1 if the government shutdown continues.

SNAP benefits support about 60,000 individuals statewide, totaling almost $10 million. HHS is awaiting further federal guidance.

Federal rules prevent states from distributing any funds—including state dollars—through EBT cards, even though North Dakota has funds that could potentially be used to cover November SNAP benefits.

Applications and renewals will still be processed so that benefits can be issued as soon as possible.

The department says that TANF, LIHEAP and WIC will operate as usual in November.
