PANOLA COUNTY, Texas — Panola County Sheriff's Office said a domestic cat was found with symptoms consistent with rabies.
According to a statement released by Sheriff Cutter Clinton, the cat was located on County Road 126 near the intersection of FM 999 in Gary on Tuesday. The animal reportedly displayed symptoms consistent with a rabies infection and was humanely euthanized.
Samples have been sent to the Texas Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Control Branch for testing.
"We encourage our citizens to vaccinate their animals against rabies and other transmittable diseases and to monitor their animals' health," Clinton said. "If you or your pet has been bitten or scratched, immediately wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical attention."
