PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Pinellas County Schools is looking at launching a new weapons detection pilot program that would use artificial intelligence to help keep schools safe.
The initiative was discussed on Tuesday during a School Board workshop.
District officials said the program meets state requirements laid out by the Florida Department of Education, the Office of Safe Schools, and the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission.
The district said the goal is to strengthen safety at every level, from early prevention to real-time response.
The new system uses a mix of sensors and artificial intelligence to detect potential weapons without forcing students and staff to stop and empty their bags.
Officials said that means less disruption to the school day a
