BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn — Eight children were safely evacuated from a burning school bus Tuesday afternoon in Brooklyn Center.

According to the Brooklyn Center Fire Department, the bus caught fire shortly before 3 p.m. near 55th Avenue and Brooklyn Boulevard. Officials say the bus driver and bystanders worked together to evacuate the students and move them to a sidewalk, away from the smoke.

Officials say there were no injuries.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire within about 15 minutes, but the bus was ruled a total loss.

Officials say the students were on their way home from school when the fire occurred. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials believe it to be a mechanical issue near the engine.
