MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) — The Berkeley Animal Center is critically overcrowded, and the Charleston Animal Society is hoping a week-long free adoption event will help clear space at both of its campuses in Berkeley and Charleston counties.
Charleston Animal Society Chief Operating Officer Aldwin Roman said the shelters remain at or near capacity, despite strong community response since the event began. Nearly 50 dogs were adopted over the weekend between both campuses.
“We’re still critically overcrowded,” Roman said. “We had a great number of adoptions last week, but unfortunately, the animals are still coming in.”
One viewer told News 2 they waited close to two hours to adopt at the Berkeley Animal Center on Monday before leaving without a pet. Roman said no one has waited that long
