A simpler plaza design for a memorial in Centennial Park is expected to cost about $165,000.
So says Pristine Dagandan, the DeGroot’s Nurseries designer who recently helped refine, with landscape architect John DeGroot, what was a $725,000 plaza design for the missing worker memorial acknowledging Sarnia’s history of occupational disease.
Key to curbing costs, she said, is using cheaper materials and getting rid of aspects that would require digging down more than 50 to 70 centimetres, past a geotextile barrier under which soil tainted with lead, asbestos and other contaminants was capped in the park between 2014 and 2017 .
