A coronial inquest into the death of a mentally ill man in police custody has been told a paramedic described him as "more bad than mad".
The inquest is examining the death of Phillip Mark Walton, who died at the Casino Police Station on March 19, 2023 .
Sergeant Wayne Crotty was the supervising officer in charge when Mr Walton was arrested and brought to the station after allegedly attempting to assault staff at a circus in the Casino Showgrounds.
He told the inquest paramedics examined Mr Walton in the police cells because he had been tasered and pepper sprayed.
Sergeant Crotty said he raised Mr Walton's schizophrenia diagnosis with the paramedics and was taken aback when one told him "99 per cent of the population suffers from schizophrenia".
