Traders upset by the knock-on effect of an improvements scheme for a town square have drawn a blank in their efforts for compensation. Some businesses surrounding Marske Square claimed takings were down as much as 70% during the works commissioned by Beyond Housing .

Fencing and a large compound obscured the view of people visiting the square, although businesses remained open, while the project itself was subject to delays and overran. Beyond has conceded “progress on the square was slower than anticipated due to contractor issues”.

Marske councillor Kendra Evans said she wrote to the company’s chief executive on behalf of the affected shops, but subsequently Beyond, via its insurers, had refused to accept any liability despite indicating it would consider claims.
