EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) -- Burdette Park in Vanderburgh County is changing the way people camp in tents.

According to Vanderburgh County Commissioners, the park is permanently closing 11 campsites. on November 1. Officials say the decision comes after ongoing safety concerns, high maintenance costs and reports of illegal activity.

Officials say it's too costly to keep the area safe and accessible for so few campers.

"The days of people bringing their children and their grandchildren out here for a weekend of camping in a tent, we weren't seeing that and hadn't seen that for about 10 years," says Parks Director Zachary Wathen. "We were seeing more of an increase in homelessness unfortunately and a lot of illegal activity, so it's just best that it's no longer a key feature to the public.
