November food assistance payments in Kansas could be delayed or temporarily halted if the federal government shutdown continues past Oct. 28, the Kansas Department for Children and Families said Tuesday.
The agency said it received notice from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service telling states to pause processing November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits until further notice. Advertisement
The letter warned that federal funds may not be enough to cover full payments if the shutdown continues.
DCF said the possible delay comes at a difficult time of year, when food banks and pantries typically see more people in need and when some children lose access to school meals during the holidays.
DCF Secretary Laura Howard said
