WISHEK, N.D. (KFYR) - While an AI data center in Ellendale is one of the largest private investments in state history, another kind of power is reshaping the landscape in Wishek and offering a glimpse of what economic growth could look like in small-town North Dakota.
In a town where everyone usually knows everyone, an influx of hundreds of out-of-town workers since September of last year made Wishek feel almost like a boomtown. City leaders estimate there are 200-300 extra workers in town since this summer. The town’s population is 950.
“Our campgrounds are full, our hotel is full. All of our rentals are full. Some are staying in surrounding area towns. I think some are driving as far as Jamestown and Bismarck to stay,” said Mary Vickers, Wishek’s city auditor.
