NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) - Republican lawmakers are closer to approving a new congressional district map proposal after it passed in the state Senate Tuesday, with a vote of 26-20.
The changes to the 1st and 3rd districts in Eastern Carolina favor Republicans who back the proposed map.
Many residents in Craven County are disappointed by the news and want change.
“I believe that it needs to be redrawn by an independent commission that is not elected but does represent both parties,” New Bern resident Samuel Coxson said.
If passed by the House, six GOP-leaning counties will move into the 1st District, currently held by Democratic Rep. Don Davis, and four counties will shift into the 3rd District, held by Republican Rep. Greg Murphy.
