Victoria’s top cop has apologised for using a police helicopter to travel to a conference in Tasmania, admitting it was the "wrong decision".

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush admitted on Wednesday that he had used one of only two police helicopters to travel to Hobart on Monday afternoon to attend the annual Australian and New Zealand police Commissioners Forum.

Also on the aircraft was New Zealand Police Commissioner Richard Chambers, who Mr Bush served with in his previous role as head of the country's police.

A spokesperson for Victoria Police said in a statement the Chief Commissioner used the force’s secondary helicopter for the trip because strong winds made use of the police force’s fixed-wing aircraft unviable.
