Avoidance won’t cure nation’s gun epidemic
Ralph Klinker’s argument (Letters, Oct. 8) is that new gun laws aren’t needed, only better enforcement. But many shootings involve guns bought legally, showing current laws don’t fix the root problem.
Blaming “the left” for wanting control ignores that most Americans, including gun owners, support stronger background checks and red flag laws, forms of enforcement, not control.
Mental health isn’t the main cause of our higher gun death rate; access is. Protecting rights and saving lives can coexist when we strengthen background checks, close loopholes and enforce existing laws. Doing nothing after repeated tragedies isn’t freedom, it’s avoidance.
