WASHINGTON D.C., DC — Demolition crews began digging into the historic East Wing of the White House on Monday to start construction on former President Donald Trump’s privately funded 90,000-square-foot ballroom. Still, questions are mounting over whether the project went through the proper approval channels.

When the expansion was announced in July, the Trump administration said the new construction would not interfere with the existing building.

Trump is far from the first president to make changes to the White House. Franklin D. Roosevelt added an indoor pool, Harry Truman installed a bowling alley, and Barack Obama turned a tennis court into a basketball court in 2009.

But there is a standard approval process in place for White House renovations.
