A heatwave in Sydney has closed in on October records, with the Sydney Airport weather station passing the previous highest temperature by one tenth of a degree early on Wednesday afternoon.
The heat has been waiting to breach the previous 38.1C record at Sydney Airport in 2005 over the course of the day, as westerly winds look set to bring even more heat to the CBD late in the afternoon.
Just north in Newcastle, temperatures rose 10C in just ten minutes early in the afternoon.
Winds were expected to breeze past 35km/h later in the afternoon and have triggered wind warnings for coastal areas.
