Secretary of Education Linda McMahon has made it clear from the beginning that her job is to eliminate the agency she leads and return those functions to the states.

Now there’s word that the Disabilities Education Act and $15 billion in funding and oversight to ensure special education services may be transferred to another federal agency. It leaves many concerned that the federal commitment to the nation’s millions of students with disabilities is eroding.

“This is the erosion of civil rights, and we’ve seen it in lots of different arenas and different populations, and now it’s absolutely coming after children with disabilities,” said Michelle Cades, who helps lead the Fairfax County Special Education PTA.
