Within the past year and a half, America has witnessed an onslaught of political violence. Melissa Hortman , former Minnesota House speaker, and her husband were assassinated in their home; Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s residence was set on fire; MAGA supporters attempted to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ; President Donald Trump was shot at, twice; and most recently, Charlie Kirk , right-wing political activist, was murdered.

It may seem like this level of political violence is unprecedented, but it’s not.
