Alabama plans to carry out its fifth execution of 2025 Thursday evening, putting Anthony Todd Boyd to death by nitrogen gas hypoxia for the kidnapping and killing of a man that ended in flames over 30 years ago.

This execution method has been controversial since its first use by the state in January 2024. Since then, Alabama has executed six prisoners via nitrogen gas hypoxia.

Boyd, who is currently 53, has been the subject of several legal battles in relation to his execution, and most recently, he has personally appealed to Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey to ask for a stay on his execution one last time.

The execution is planned for a 30-hour window between midnight Oct. 23 and 6 a.m. Oct. 24.
