SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Hindus across the globe are celebrating their largest holiday of the year known as Diwali.

This includes members of the local temple in Savannah.

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a five-day celebration that kicked off Saturday this year. Wednesday is the final day of the festival that BAPS members say took months to prepare for.

Diwali is one of the biggest festivals in India. It gets its name from the row of clay lamps that are lit outside homes to protect people from spiritual darkness.

Across the world, millions of people celebrate Diwali, and in our area around 400 people usually attend and participate in events throughout the celebration.

Festivities traditionally include dinners, parties and prayer.
