NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Starting in 2026, Louisiana’s open-primary system will give way to closed-party primaries for some key state races. But Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said Tuesday (Oct. 21) he opposes the change.

He is speaking up ahead of a special session that will focus on Louisiana’s election code and election dates for next year, as the state awaits a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on its congressional district map.

“One way to fix it, instead of pushing back these election dates, is let’s go back to the open primary,” Nungesser said.

Nungesser penned an op-ed titled, “If it Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix it: Keep Louisiana’s Elections Open and Trust the People.” In it, he praised the current system.
