A proposed gas plant in Colleton County would emit more than 164 tons of fine particle pollution each year, posing serious health risks across a wide swath of South Carolina and beyond, new Harvard University research found.

Commissioned by the Southern Environmental Law Center, the report said the proposed Dominion Energy-Santee Cooper gas plant near Canadys would generate significant amounts of PM2.5 – tiny particles linked to higher rates of heart attacks, pneumonia and other diseases.

The analysis also found this fine particulate pollution would disproportionately affect Black residents, and that particulate levels would be highest near the plant but also could drift as far as Georgia and Florida.
