A Detroit felon accused of robbing and killing a Farmington Hills man five years ago got a second chance when his trial last year in Wayne County ended in mistrial because the jury couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict.

The prosecutor subsequently planned a second trial, which was scheduled to start this past Monday. But that day, the defendant, Robert Lee Bailey Jr., 54, opted out of trial, pleading no contest to second-degree homicide and felony firearm-second offense in connection with the murder of Darius Whiting.

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, Whiting was killed on Sept. 22, 2020 during an armed robbery in Dearborn. Police officers dispatched the next day to an alley on Schlaff Street, near Michigan Avenue and Schaefer Road, found Whiting’s body in a car. Whiting di
