A man has been taken into custody after driving his car into a security gate outside the White House, officials have said.

The incident occurred at around 10:37 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at a security gate at 17th and E streets near President Donald Trump 's residence, the U.S. Secret Service said in a statement, sent to PEOPLE by a White House spokesperson.
