“This Week” in 2000, 25 years ago : A land swap between the City of Alexandria and the Douglas County Agricultural Association should clear the way for a new National Guard Armory and Community Center. The city agreed to transfer an 822-foot by 400-foot section of its land at the Fairgrounds – which includes property east of the fair entrance road, where the cattle barn and seven other buildings are located – in exchange for a same-size piece of land west of the Runestone Community Center (RCC) owned by the agricultural association. The city has been leasing the Fairgrounds land to the Fair Board (which operates the agricultural association). Under the agreement, any land not used for Armory purposes will be included in the lease, which expires in 2035.
