A new report released Wednesday by the Montreal Economic Institute (MEI) shows Manitoba is losing young nurses at one of the fastest rates in the country, highlighting growing concerns about the province’s ability to retain health-care workers.

According to the report, 58 nurses under the age of 35 left Manitoba’s workforce in 2023 for every 100 who entered it. That compares with a national average of 40 nurses leaving for every 100 joining.

The analysis found that nursing vacancies across Canada have nearly tripled in five years, rising from 13,178 in 2018 to 41,716 in 2023. Manitoba recorded the steepest increase in turnover since 2014 — nearly 127 per cent — as the province continues to struggle with recruitment and retention.
