The Humane Society of Harford County is caring for three newborn puppies after a passerby discovered them abandoned in a box along a walking trail early Saturday morning.
The Good Samaritan found the box near Route 7 and Creswell Road, close to the Riverside Apartments in Belcamp, as morning temperatures dipped into the low 50s.
Inside the box were four puppies, believed to be only a day or two old.
According to the Humane Society, the puppies eyes were still closed and without their mother, the animals had little chance of surviving.
The person who found them rushed the litter to the Humane Society of Harford County, where staff immediately began warming and feeding the puppies.
