BENTON -- Fire marshals are investigating a fatal fire that happened in Benton early this morning.
They were called to 70 Pleasant Drive in Benton just after 2 am at the request of Fairfield – Benton rescue.
A spokesperson says when firefighters arrived they found the single family residence was fully engulfed in flames.
Pleasant Street was shut down while crews from several towns battled the flames.
The spokesperson says while they were fighting the fire, crews discovered a deceased person inside the home.
The remains were taken to the medical examiners office in Augusta to determine cause of death and positive identification.
A deceased dog was also found inside the residence.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
