As the Florida Gators look to turn a 3-4 season around following the firing of coach Billy Napier, they're turning to Steve Spurrier to help out sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway.
Steve Spurrier Jr., that is.
Spurrier, who was previously the offensive coordinator at Tulsa, joined the Gators' staff this season as an offensive analyst. Now, after the recently elevated interim head coach Billy Gonzales chose to shake up some staff roles, Spurrier will be coaching on the field, primarily working with Lagway and the quarterbacks.
Napier was Florida's play-caller on offense, but that role has been assumed by quarterbacks coach Ryan O'Hara. Co-offensive coordinator Russ Callaway will maintain a major role when it comes to game-planning.
Gonzales revealed Wednesday that O'Hara will be coaching from the booth, leading to the decision to move Spurrier down to the field.
Spurrier played under his father at Duke and coached under him at both Florida and South Carolina. Since the elder Spurrier's retirement in 2025, Spurrier Jr. has had stints as an assistant at Oklahoma, Washington State, Mississippi State and Tulsa. He was not retained as the offensive coordinator at the latter following Kevin Wilson's firing last season.
The Gators will hope Spurrier can help a struggling Lagway, who showed impressive flashes as a true freshman but has shown some signs of regression after an injury-plagued offseason limited his development. Lagway is completing 65.3% of his passes this season for 1,513 yards, nine touchdowns and nine interceptions.
