The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands council has approved the purchase of a new medium-duty plow truck to replace a vehicle destroyed by fire earlier this year.

Council unanimously voted last week to proceed with Option 3, authorizing staff to acquire a medium-duty truck equipped with a plow, sander, and wing, with funding for costs beyond insurance coverage to be included in the 2026 capital budget.

The decision follows the loss of Unit Number 39, a 2019 Dodge Ram 5500, which was deemed a total writeoff after a vehicle fire on May 18. Insurance provided $161,867 toward its replacement, but the cost of the preferred new unit is expected to reach between $230,000 and $250,000.
