Police have released shocking CCTV of the moment four masked men armed with guns and machetes broke into a Sydney home where two young children were present.

The terrifying incident took place close to 1am on Tuesday, September 9, when police were called to a home in Moorebank, in southwest Sydney.

Officers arrived and were told a group of four masked men armed with firearms, a machete and a pickaxe had attempted to force entry into the home.

However, the group ran from the scene after they were unable to break in, police said.

The residents at home at the time included two young children, aged 10 and 13.

A duffle bag was left at the property and police established a crime scene.
