Srinagar, Oct 22: With cancer surgeries taking top priority under the new ‘cancer first’ policy, SMHS hospital of GMC Srinagar, the main centre for gallstone operations in Jammu and Kashmir, is struggling to manage rising surgical loads and growing patient delays.
Head Department of Minimal Access and General Surgery, GMC Srinagar, Prof. (Dr) Iqbal Saleem said that around 700 to 1,000 new patients (new tickets) are registered in the department every day, with the majority suffering from gallstone-related diseases.
“Imagine the strain on manpower, equipment, and infrastructure due to such an overwhelming patient load. People from all corners of Kashmir Valley, Chenab, and even Jammu come to SMHS Hospital hoping to be treated at this premier health facility,” he said.
