Several buildings on Niagara Regional Agriculture Society’s former Niagara Regional Exhibition grounds have been demolished to make way for a new school and housing.

Mountainview Fairgrounds Development Inc. bought the 21-hectare property on the Welland-Thorold border at 1100 Niagara St. for nearly $40 million last year.

The developer turned over 3.4 hectares of land in the southwest corner of the property to District School Board of Niagara for its new Welland-Thorold elementary school.

It is keeping 18 hectares for residential development.

The $33.1-million school will be home to 726 students, with 49 licensed child care spaces, and is expected to open in September 2027. The school will serve children in the growing area of north Welland. It will also serve students to the east of th
