NORTH HERO, Vt. (WCAX) - Authorities are investigating the death of a 71-year-old man after his canoe capsized on Lake Champlain on Tuesday.

Vermont State Police say two men -- both relatives -- set out in a canoe around 2:30 p.m. from North Hero near the Hero’s Welcome store.

They say the canoe capsized near Knight Island State Park and that the men -- who were both wearing life jackets -- became separated.

Paul Council, 67, of Woodbury, swam to Knight Island and was stuck there overnight. On Wednesday morning, he found a canoe and alerted authorities.

Police say the presumed body of his companion, a 71-year-old Montpelier man, was found around noon Wednesday, about 2 miles north of where the canoe overturned.

Police are not identifying the victim pending notification of relatives.
